# Deadlines

> Every protected quote fixes when each step can happen.

A protected quote carries four times. The x402 issuer requires the submit deadline to be at least 15 minutes after the quote, so these are the earliest it allows.

| Deadline | After the quote | What it means |
| - | - | - |
| Pay by | 5 min | The quote expires if not paid by then |
| Submit result | \~16 min | The seller must post its result before this. After it, with no result, the buyer can be refunded |
| Unlock | \~31 min | From now the seller can collect. Until now the buyer can dispute a posted result |
| Dispute unlock | \~46 min | From now the arbiter can pay out a disputed escrow |

## What it looks like

* **Honest seller:** result posted about a minute after payment, seller collects at \~31 min.
* **No delivery:** nothing posted, the watcher refunds the buyer at \~16 min.
* **Wrong file:** result posted, the watcher disputes before \~31 min, the arbiter pays out at \~46 min.
